Can I buy USDT, USDC or other stablecoins without KYC — and when do I need it?
Yes. 12 of the 12 stablecoins listed here can be bought on a DEX with a self-custody wallet and no identity check: USDT, USDC, USDS, DAI, USDG, PYUSD, RLUSD, GHO, EURC, FDUSD, EURCV, USDCV. You do need KYC to buy them on a centralised exchange, and to mint or redeem directly with the issuer — except USDS, DAI, GHO, which a protocol issues without KYC. Some issuers, including Tether and Circle, can freeze individual addresses.
Stablecoins such as USDT and USDC are ordinary tokens once they exist: anyone can send them to anyone, and decentralised exchanges sell them without checking who you are. KYC comes in at two other points — when you buy on a centralised exchange, which verifies its own customers, and when you mint or redeem directly with the issuer, which for most fiat-backed stablecoins is reserved for verified institutions.

How to choose
Buying on a DEX without KYC means you need a self-custody wallet, a little of the chain’s native token for fees, and care with contract addresses — copies of popular stablecoins with the same name are common, so take the address from the issuer’s own site. Think about the exit as well: turning stablecoins back into bank money almost always goes through an exchange or the issuer, and both will verify you then. For fiat-backed coins the issuer can freeze an address; protocol-issued coins such as DAI depend on their collateral and smart contracts instead.
More questions
Can I mint a stablecoin myself without KYC?
Yes, for protocol-issued coins: USDS (Sky (formerly MakerDAO)), DAI (Sky (formerly MakerDAO)), GHO (Aave). They are created by depositing collateral or borrowing against it in a smart contract, with no identity check. The fiat-backed ones — USDT, USDC, USDG, PYUSD, RLUSD, EURC, FDUSD, EURCV, USDCV — are minted only by verified customers of the issuer, mostly institutions.
Do I need KYC to cash stablecoins out to my bank account?
In practice, yes. Turning stablecoins into bank money goes through a centralised exchange, a payment provider or the issuer itself, and each of them verifies its customers. Swapping one stablecoin for another on a DEX does not need KYC.
Which of these can I buy on an EU-regulated exchange?
Only those authorised under MiCA: USDC, USDG, EURC, EURCV, USDCV. USDT, USDS, DAI, PYUSD, RLUSD, GHO, FDUSD are not, so EU-regulated platforms may not sell them to EU customers — on a DEX they remain available.
Can my USDT or USDC be frozen?
Yes. Tether and Circle can freeze individual addresses, and have done so at the request of authorities. Buying without KYC does not change that. Protocol-issued coins such as DAI have no such issuer switch for ordinary transfers, but depend on their collateral and smart contracts instead.
Which is the largest?
By size, USDT at $183.4B, followed by USDC at $74.7B and USDS at $6.6B. Size is not safety, but a larger product usually means a deeper market to sell into.
